Providing Tax File Numbers (TFNs)

Don't let employees pay more tax by not providing their TFN.

Your TFN responsibilities are to:

  • Accept TFNs from your employees

  • Pass them on when you next make a contribution to the employee's superannuation fund, and

  • Respect the privacy of employees who provide you with their TFN.

If an employee doesn't supply their TFN, their contributions will be taxed at the top marginal rate, which can be as high as 49%1. They also won't be able to make after-tax contributions to their super and could miss out on the Government's Co-contribution scheme.

Your employees can check to see if we have their TFN, using their MemberOnline account. They can also provide us with consent to search for any lost super.

AustSafe Super only uses an employee’s TFN for the following purposes:

  • Calculating tax on their benefits

  • Providing their TFN to the ATO

  • Providing their TFN to another superannuation provider, or

  • For identifying and consolidating any other accounts they may have.

The Your Super Guide will give your employees more information on the implications of not providing their TFN.
